MSE 445 — Corrosion of Metals

Course Description: This course deals with the principles that determine the corrosion behavior of metals. Topics include electrochemistry, thermodynamics, and kinetics of corrosion. Behavior of ferrous and nonferrous metals, corrosion rates, corrosion control, cathodic and anodic protection, high-temperature corrosion, corrosion testing, and electrolytic machining methods are also discussed.

Prerequisites: A freshman course in chemistry and a freshman/sophomore course in physics. Courses in advanced mechanics of rigid bodies and deformable bodies, thermodynamics, and materials will be useful.

Credit: 3 or 4 hours (counts toward a certificate in Materials Engineering)
