Program Overview

Graduate study in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MatSE) at Illinois provides the fundamental knowledge, practical skills, and professional experience necessary to enter a successful career involving advanced materials.

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering offers graduate work leading to the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Materials Science and Engineering. The student body of about 160 students and the faculty have varied backgrounds in science and engineering. Faculty members carry out research in many different areas, and students may choose to specialize in various aspects of materials science and engineering, including ceramics, metals, polymers, electronic materials, biomaterials and composites. The MatSE Department emphasizes interdisciplinary research, and collaboration across engineering departments is common.
