Learn more about the Engineering Online experience and what you can expect from some of our current students and alumni – in their own words.
I had a very positive experience with the online program. Having a full-time job and refereeing high school volleyball and basketball did not allow for any definite on-campus classroom time but with the flexibility of the online program, I was able to view the lectures at my leisure and complete the course work by the time it was due. My busy schedule was not conducive to on-campus classes so the online program gave me the opportunity to obtain a master's degree and continue working full-time."
Given that [ENG 566] will be my last class requirement for my online MSME degree, it was very fitting that I take a class that helps me better understand how the financial side of the business works. I think I will need to focus more on these financial issues to become a more balanced employee and manager.”
There are plenty of places you can learn a programming language. Here you can learn how to master programming. I chose the I2CS program because I hoped it would, as my undergrad work here did, provide a solid foundation for a long career in the software field. Technology changes fast; it always has and it always will. The hot tool or language today will be replaced by a better one tomorrow. I didn’t want to learn the tools, I wanted to learn how to make the best use of them to solve whatever problems may present themselves. I wanted a broad and deep understanding of software, how to build it, how to test it, how to adapt it, and how to do that on both a small and large scale. I wanted to understand they theory behind it. I wanted to understand the architecture of the machines on which it would run today and tomorrow. I also wanted to learn how to keep learning so that I could pick up the next tool, and the next. I found all of these things. This is not an easy program. It requires stretching the brain and spending the time. But it is worth all of the effort. The things the I2CS programs doesn’t have – like specific training in Java or C++ or web technologies, you can find in many places. The things this program does provide, the things I mentioned above, are much harder to find. And, here they are, all in one place.”
What drew me to the program was the fact that proctored exams ensure a high level of integrity, something many other programs are lacking. I have greatly appreciated the flexibility of the staff to work around business trips and everyday business schedules, something I did not fully anticipate with the mixture of on and off campus students.”
I enrolled in the online MCS program hoping to get a master’s degree in computer science in computer science at one of the best universities without the overhead of traveling to and from college. The course turned out to be everything I hoped for in terms of the convenience and has been a great learning experience. It contains all the elements of an on-campus program in terms of homework assignments, exams, student presentations which we did remotely, and healthy interaction with other students."
I was employed full-time during my study in the program. The flexibility of the program allowed me to pursue the degree without putting a halt to my career development, and the impact on my work schedule due to coursework was minimal. My boss at that time was very supportive in helping me by proctoring the exams, but I never had to take time off work to travel for school.”
I really enjoy the flexibility that I2CS gives me – it’s like having Tivo for class! I can watch half of a lecture, pause it, eat dinner with some friends, and then come back and finish up lecture without missing a beat.”
The Engineering Online program from Illinois will be challenging and demanding, but at the end I will know that I have earned a real degree from one of the top-ranked CS graduate schools in the US."
I was apprehensive about taking a course (and especially an entire degree) online. I was afraid that the professor/TA wouldn’t be there when I needed them, there’d be technical difficulties, and since I was an online student I wouldn’t be treated the same as [an] on-campus [student]. I was wrong! Thanks for your hard work!!!”
The CS program at UIUC is considered to be top 5 in the country and I2CS allowed me to get the same education without having to quit my job. The fact that the program quality was not compromised even when offered online was a big deciding factor for me. Completing the program was not easy but I learned as much as I would have attending the classes in person. I am very glad that I chose to attend UIUC.”
In summary, I felt that I learned just as much as if I was there in a classroom (in fact, much more than I have learned in some classrooms).”
I am very happy I have taken [ENG 566]. It has allowed me to better track my company’s financial performance and understand the importance of cash flow.”
I really appreciate your quick response, this speaks very well [of] you and your institution.”
It was great working with your online classes and from what I saw from other universities, I would say that yours were some of the best.”
I’d especially like to acknowledge the great support I got from my [mathematics for engineers course] mentor... He was always responsive to my questions and helped me stay on track. I know he has his own coursework to attend to, but I always got the feeling [he] is the type of tutor who puts the needs of his students first. His encouragement was very much appreciated. It kept me motivated to do my best, even after long Saturdays (6-8 hours) of homework problems. He was a key element making the course effective and enjoyable.”
I’ve been pleased with the personal interactions I’ve had with everyone at Illinois to date. Because this has been a positive experience, I’m planning to take another class.”
I wish these [management] programs and courses existed when I completed my degree at UIUC. Clearly, they facilitate the transition from academia to industry and provide students with career alternatives that would otherwise be unavailable. UIUC truly has a progressive Engineering program and Engineering Online has made it particularly convenient for professionals to continue learning.”
I feel that the knowledge and degree I will attain through your online program will meet or exceed the offerings on any campus. I truly appreciate all you have done in making the program available and facilitating my involvement.”
I REALLY enjoyed [ENG 560]. My day-to-day tasks at work involve such a very small part of what my company does as a whole (as is the case with a lot of engineers), that I lose sight of what management is doing and why. After your class, things are much more clear in the businessrealm of my company. Now when we have our big executives come in and give the quarterly results and future business plans, I understand them more.”
It's been great working with you and your office during my graduate degree program! I think it's a great way to pursue [a] master's degree without having to stop working. I'll continue to recommend the U of I program.”

[Entrepreneurship for Engineers] WAS A GREAT CLASS and you are to be commended for its content, organization, and delivery! I thoroughly enjoyed the speakers and felt both textbooks were very relevant to my industry experiences during the past 30 years. One of my sons (I already have 3 at UIUC) was admitted to the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. I am elated that he, along with other UIUC engineering students, will have access to the TEC Center resources that you and your colleagues have created to facilitate technology innovation and commercialization. KEEP UP THE OUTSTANDING WORK!!!”
